About Us

CHANARD - Centre for Human and Natural Resources Development

We work in Dindigul for rural & slum development by taking up natural resources, water & soil conservation programs, along with the provision of empowerment & employment opportunities for the people.

CHANARD is a non-government and non-profit organization established in 1996 in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, that works on sustainable utilization of natural resources, innovative rural technology implementation, capacity and perspective trainings for employment sources, women empowerment, education, water and sanitation, watershed and waste land development fund programs, water and soil conservation programs, tree plantations, socio-economic development of the tribal, poor and deprived rural people, and look towards building a selfsufficient and self-reliant rural India. Since its inception, CHANARD has engaged itself in marching towards its vision and mission through various schemes sponsored by the government and other agencies involved in rural and urban slum development.

Chanard’s Participation in the Niranthara Sahayak Capacity Building Programme (in collaboration with

Chanard has been privileged to be a part of the Niranthara Sahayak Capacity Building Programme, an intensive organizational development initiative spearheaded by Dhwani Foundation. This flagship programme is designed to strengthen grassroots NGOs by building their institutional capacities and enhancing long-term sustainability and impact. The Niranthara Sahayak programme supports NGOs like Chanard in developing key internal systems, aligning with sectoral best practices, and establishing strong operational and strategic frameworks. The programme’s focus is on enabling NGOs to become: • Compliant with regulatory and statutory requirements • Transparent and accountable in governance and financial practices • Efficient through data-driven decision-making • Resilient and sustainable beyond the tenure of specific donors

Staff Capacity Building on Child Protection and POSH Awareness Generation Training

CHANARD recently took a significant step toward strengthening its organizational culture by organizing an intensive training session focused on Child Protection and Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) for all staff members. This initiative was designed not only to comply with legal and institutional mandates but also to reinforce our core values of dignity, safety, and respect for all. The primary objective of the training was to raise awareness and deepen the understanding of critical issues surrounding child safety and workplace harassment. The session highlighted the importance of recognizing early warning signs, understanding the various forms of abuse or misconduct, and responding effectively using appropriate channels and support systems. The training was structured to be highly engaging and interactive. Staff participated in thought-provoking discussions, analyzed real-life case studies, and explored practical strategies for prevention and intervention. These activities ensured that the learning experience was not theoretical but closely aligned with everyday situations that might arise in the field or workplace. Importantly, the session went beyond the scope of formal policies and legal obligations. It emphasized the need to build and sustain a culture of empathy, responsibility, and proactive safeguarding across all levels of the organization. The training also underlined the shared responsibility that each team member holds in upholding ethical standards and protecting the rights of children and colleagues alike. By conducting this training, CHANARD has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for both its beneficiaries and staff. This initiative serves as a cornerstone for fostering long-term behavioral change and setting a benchmark for accountability

Stem Cells Awareness Generation Training Programme

CHANARD successfully organized a comprehensive Awareness Generation and Training Programme for young girls, aimed at equipping them with the knowledge, confidence, and life skills necessary to navigate today’s challenges. This initiative focused on creating awareness around health, hygiene, education, gender equality, digital literacy, and self-empowerment. By fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, the programme encouraged young women to recognize their potential, make informed decisions, and emerge as confident change-makers in their communities. Through interactive sessions, group discussions, and practical demonstrations, CHANARD continues to nurture the leaders of tomorrow, one empowered girl at a time.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME

CHANARD firmly believes that when women lead, everything transforms. In today's dynamic world, gender equality is not just a moral obligation but an economic imperative. Empowering women with economic independence and leadership opportunities is a powerful catalyst for growth—benefiting our clients, our communities, our people, and our stakeholders. India, with its rich tapestry of customs and traditions, holds deep reverence for the feminine divine—worshipping goddesses and cherishing the roles of mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives. Yet, paradoxically, our society still struggles with deep-rooted patriarchal structures and male superiority complexes. To challenge these outdated norms and dismantle discrimination, empowering women is essential. Gender inequality manifests in everyday life—in skewed sex ratios, food distribution within families, limited access to higher education, restricted choices in marriage, and exclusion from key decision-making processes. These patterns form a vicious cycle of disempowerment. At CHANARD, our focus is on the most vulnerable and marginalized women—those living below the poverty line in rural areas. We believe true empowerment must come from within, and the most effective model to spark that change is through Women Self Help Groups (WSHGs). These groups foster solidarity, unity, and collective strength among women. Through SHGs, women shift from isolation to collaboration, from silence to shared voice, and from dependence to self-reliance. WSHGs are globally acknowledged as a transformative tool for women's empowerment. Individual struggles are magnified through collective effort. Together, women identify shared challenges, plan common activities, and pursue sustainable solutions for upliftment. Since 2003, CHANARD has received steadfast support from the Tamil Nadu Corporation for the Development of Women and NABARD, enabling impactful women-centric initiatives across two key districts of Tamil Nadu. Their collaboration has been instrumental in our mission to build a more equitable and empowered future for rural women

Watershed Development Programs

Our organization is involved in various Watershed Development Programs which includes:-

• Sankarapuram Watershed Development Project in Theni District, Supported by NABARD.
• UPNRM Project at Sankarapuram watershed in Theni District, Supported by NABARD.
• Mallingapuram Watershed Development Project in Theni District, Supported by NABARD.
• UPNRM Project at Chekkapatti in Dindigul District, Supported by NABARD.
• Tamilnadu Comprehensive Wasteland Program in Periyakulam, Theni, Chinnamanur, Bodi, Uthamapalayam and Cumbum blocks of Theni District from 2001–2006 and 2004–2010. Theni District.
• NAWPRA in Periyakulam and Aundipatty blocks from 2003–2007—Theni District.
• IWDP in Bodi block from 2003 – 2008.
• IWMP in Theni district from 2009–2013.
• ATMA in Theni District 2010.

Self Employment Training Program

With the help of our NGO, 9562 jobless rural women, young people, and teenagers till now have received training for self-employment. Computer and tutoring classes enable them to maintain their financial stability.

Environment Conservation Programs

The Tamil Nadu Afforestation Project (TAP) is a reforestation project sponsored by the Forest Department in Dindigul and Theni districts. The Tamil Nadu Bio-Diversity Conservation and Greening Project (TBGP) is a conservation project in Dindigul district. Over 18,000 indigenous tree saplings were planted as part of these projects.

HIV/ AIDS Prevention and Interventional Programs

HIV/ AIDS Prevention and Interventional Programs:-

• Of the 4827 people referred to the government hospital for HIV testing, 1268 are in treatment with ART & NVP.
• 785 women SHG members covered on TB, DOTS and Care & Support services to PLWHAS.
• Meetings and Trainings conducted for medical professional on quality RTI/STI care.
• 1307 patients successfully attended medical treatment for STDs and RTI.
• 866 Infants saved under “Prevention of Transmission of HIV/AIDS Parent to Child” Program.
• 7632 Pregnant women covered by Out Reach Worker (ORW) and tested by ICTC and ANC.
• Behavior change communication to 525 FSWs at Kodaikanal.
• Awareness generation on prevention of HIV/AIDS and care and support to 10 lakhs tourists at Kodaikanal.
